Spied: 2013 Ram 1500 Diesel

With the American-market Jeep Grand Cherokee receiving a diesel engine option and Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne hinting other light trucks and SUVs in the U.S. will get diesels, our spy photographer has now caught a Ram 1500 tester at a diesel pump.

In the spy photo, a man is seen inserting a green diesel pump into the Ram pickup’s fuel tank. This suggests Ram is in the middle of development on a diesel Ram 1500 truck that could take some attention away from the Ford F-150 with the increasingly popular EcoBoost V-6 engine.

The refreshed 2013 Ram 1500 (pictured below) is set to receive Chrysler Group’s Pentastar V-6 engine and an eight-speed automatic that’s already available in the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300. A diesel 1500 would lead to improved mileage, a good thing considering the pre-refresh 2012 Ram 1500′s EPA ratings top out at 16 mpg combined, down from the Ford F-150 with the 3.7-liter V-6, at 19 mpg.

While the Nissan Titan has been caught testing a Cummins diesel engine, some suggest the Ram 1500 will share the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 found in the Jeep Cherokee offered in the European market.
