Hot News: Alfa Romeo to Produce 4C in Summer 2013

While other automakers face delays with their upcoming products, niche brand Alfa Romeo may actually be ahead of schedule with its 4C sports car, an Autocar report suggests. The British publication says the production Alfa Romeo 4C will be officially unveiled next summer, months ahead of its originally anticipated 2014 Detroit show debut.

Unveiled as a concept at last year’s Geneva Motor show, the 4C is a compact rear-drive coupe that uses lightweight construction and a new turbocharged 1.8-liter I-4 engine. As we previously reported, Alfa Romeo is aiming to keep the car’s curb weight under 2000 pounds, making the expected 230 hp output of the base engine go even farther. A higher-performance version with about 300 hp is reportedly also in the works, and Autocar says that engine is destined for other models within the Fiat-Chrysler group, perhaps even a future Dodge Dart SRT4 model.

In addition, insiders confirmed to Autocar that development of the Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan is proceeding as planned, and that the new car will be assembled at two global production sites likely in Europe and North America.

So let’s get this straight: not only is a rear-drive, sub-2000-pound coupe with at least 230 hp on its way, but it might even arrive early? Somebody pinch us.
