Spied: 2013 Nissan Sentra

What It Is: A 2013 Nissan Sentra prototype wearing zebra-stripe black and white camouflage. The Sentra likely is the next Nissan vehicle in line to get a major update; the company also has plans to revise four other vehicles in the next year or so. Nissan has already previewed the new Sentra with the nearly identical Sylphy, which was revealed for global markets at this year’s Beijing auto show.

Why It Matters: Look up the word “dated” in the dictionary, and you’re likely to find a picture of the current Sentra. It has been on sale since 2007, and its styling makes it look as though it were constructed from Lego pieces. The blocky design originally emulated the two-generations-removed Altima sedan, so it’s about time for a redesign. A lot has changed in the compact-car segment since the Sentra was last updated, and it’s heating up as more buyers look to downsize into cars with greater fuel efficiency. Nissan’s small offering needs to be fresh and on its game to properly compete in this new small-car arena.

Platform: The next Sentra will again ape its bigger brother, the Altima. Like the 2013 version of Nissan’s mid-size sedan, the Sentra gets a softer and curvier look punctuated by flowing creases and lines. We think the design is somewhat handsome, but its body panels are not the most exciting in the compact class.
