Spied: 2013 Volkswagen Golf

The all-new, seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf will have more rakish looks than the current model when it goes on sale in a year’s time.

Volkswagen’s plan to subtly alter the proportions of its bread-and-butter hatchback includes giving it a wider footprint, a lower roofline and a lower driving position, which should improve the driving environment.

In addition, the Mk7 Golf will get a more steeply raked windscreen to further move its design in a new direction.

The subtle rethink is intended to create a greater distinction between the three-door, five-door and high-roofed Golf Plus models. The next Golf Plus will be more clearly positioned as a spacious five-seat mini-MPV.

Volkswagen’s intention is to make the three-door Golf Mk7 look even sportier than the five-door, although it won’t be as extreme as the new Vauxhall Astra GTC.

Inside, the Golf will get an all-new instrument panel and a centre console that is angled towards the driver.

There’s also a new active steering system on the way, called ‘mechanical active’.
