New Car: 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport

Its predecessor was an Auto Express favourite thanks to agile handling and an effervescent engine, and now there's an all new Suzuki Swift Sport. This is the first official image of the lightly fettled supermini, ahead of its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

We had a glimpse of what to expect, with the flourescent Suzuki Swift Concept-S revealed at the Geneva show back in March, but the car you see here is the production-ready model. And although the styling isn't quite as extrovert as the concept, it's still more muscular than the standard Swift.

A bigger front grille, lower front bumper and chunkier side sills hint at the additional performance. As no interior or rear photos have been released at this stage, it's impossible to tell how it will look from certain angles, but Suzuki claims the cabin gets "design features that heighten excitement about the driving experience". Expect twin exhausts to protrude either side of a diffuser at the back, and a more prominent roof spoiler is clearly visible.

Under the hood is a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine hooked up to a six-speed manual gearbox. Developed exclusively for the Swift Sport, it produces 136bhp – 13bhp more than the outgoing car – and 160Nm of torque. That suggests a 0-62mph time of around 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. The suspension has been stiffened and lowered too, for better stability in the corners, and an "exclusive rear-suspension design" applied.

We'll have all the information and a full gallery of images, live from the Frankfurt show, when the car makes its debut on September 13. For more details click here.
