New Car: 2013 Smart ForTwo

Smart has blessed the tiny Fortwo with a face lift for 2012, which consists primarily of visual updates for the compact car’s exterior. The new Fortwo, which goes on sale in the U.S. this May, soldiers on without any major mechanical changes.

The transformation begins with a new front larger grille, and Smart’s logo is now centered in the grille rather than above it. At the bottom of the front fascia, the car’s three air intakes have been combined into one opening, and both the side skirts and rear lip have been restyled. There also are new wheel designs, in nine-, three-, and six-spoke variations.

Updates for the car’s compact cabin comprise new trim options, like leather covering for dashboard, as well as a unique blend of crystal gray and black leather for the seats and door panels. Depending on which trim level of the Fortwo is selected, the mirror housings may be black or color-matched to the Fortwo’s safety frame. All the aforementioned updates apply to every version of the Smart — from the thrifty electric Fortwo to the sporty Brabus variants.

Since 1998, Smart has sold 1.3 million copies of the Fortwo worldwide; last year the company sold 2652 examples of city car in the U.S. market, and 101,996 copies globally.
