Hot News: Lamborghini to Introduce an SUV at Beijing Auto Show

The rumors were right: Lamborghini is developing an SUV, and it will be introduced at the Beijing auto show in April. A senior Audi official told Automotive News that “Speculation in the press is largely correct” about plans for an SUV from Lamborghini.

The new SUV will be introduced in China to gauge public perception. If it is well-received there, the model will join the Lamborghini lineup in 2016 in order to compete with cars like the BMW X6 and upcoming Maserati Kubang. The company reportedly plans to sell about 1500 examples per year; China and the U.S. would be the biggest sales markets for the SUV.

The sporty, all-wheel-drive SUV will be based on the same platform as the next-generation Audi Q7, measuring about 197 inches long. It is expected to be powered by a 580-hp version of the 5.2-liter V-10 found in the Gallardo supercar. AN reports that extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum will keep the Lamborghini’s curb weight below 4400 pounds.Following on that model, Lamborghini could also launch a hybrid version of the SUV combining the V-10 with a 107-hp electric motor.

Styling for the new SUV will apparently be drawn from that of the new Aventador supercar. Expect a sleeker, more modern design than Lamborghini’s last SUV — the 1986-1992 LM 002 (pictured).

AN also reports that a four-door Lamborghini sedan, inspired by the Estoque concept that was shown in Paris in 2008, is under development. That car would fight the likes of the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, but not much more is known at the moment.
