New Concept Car: Mini Rocketman Olympic

Recent rumors have suggested that the Mini Rocketman concept from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show was, in fact, alive and kicking. Today we’ve got confirmation that the Rocketman still lives (in concept form) with a new livery meant to pay tribute to the British Union Jack and the 2012 London Olympics

The Mini Rocketman concept’s new look isn’t exactly new; this is the same car that leaked a few weeks ago on Twitter from the streets of London. The unique 3+1-seater two-door hatchback loses its satin white and carbon fiber paint job for a gorgeous deep blue paint with red and white accents on the grille, roof, and wheels. The Rocketman’s signature glass Union Jack roof remains, and it features white fiber optic lighting to help it stand out.

The Rocketman concept’s British and Olympic theme carries over into its interior. The Rocketman seats are trimmed in red, white, and blue leather, with matching seatbelts and doors. Mini has also refinished the circular surround of the air vents, door pulls, and stereo speakers with contrasting red and white rings. In keeping with the Olympic theme, the center console now has a display of little figures playing basketball, including someone dunking. The Rocketman Concept’s new dashboard and door trim feature the name of every host city of the summer Olympics, from Athens 1896 to London 2012.

We don’t expect the Rocketman to ever enter production because it would ride on a unique (read: expensive) chassis, and likely have trouble passing stringent European and American crash tests. Even so, the Rocketman concept will be shown off for all to see, in London near the Olympic and Paralympic Village at the BMW Group Pavilion during the games, which start in July and end in early September.
