The fourth-generation Seat Toledo is previewed by this close-to-production study which is on display at today's Geneva motor show. The Toledo Concept shows that the production version, which is due to go on sale at the end of 2012, will have a sleek hatchback-come-saloon design.
The Toledo slots into the Seat model range between the Ibiza and Leon and will mark a dramatic departure from the third-generation Toledo, which was a booted version of the tall-bodied Altea hatchback.
Seat is emphasising practicality and value-for-money with the new Toledo, positioning the car as a hatchback with plentiful load-lugging capability. It possesses a large rear hatch to enable easy loading and a folding rear bench. With the rear seats up, the boot has a capacity of more than 500 litres.
At 4480mm, the Toledo Concept is 165mm longer than the current Seat Leon and has a wheelbase of 2600mm. It is a similar width to the Ibiza, which is 1693mm.
The Toledo Concept’s exterior styling is a further development of Seat’s design language and bears a close family resemblance to the Skoda MissionL concept shown at Frankfurt last year.
The trapezoidal front grille has been given a very wide and low design, and the Toledo Concept has an aggressive front headlamp shape that’s part of Seat’s new design language. Large rear doors ease entry to the back seats, and a shallow angle to the rear windscreen emphasises the concept’s coupĂ©-like shape.
The production Toledo will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s ‘AO-plus’ platform, a more sophisticated version of the ‘AO-entry’ platform that underpins cars such as the Indian-market Volkswagen Vento. The production Toledo’s engine line-up will be drawn from the latest range of Volkswagen Group powerplants.
The new Toledo will be a sister car to the forthcoming Skoda Rapid, which is the official production name for the MissionL concept seen at last year’s Frankfurt motor show. According to Seat sources, the new Toledo will cost about €13-14,000 in Spain, suggesting its price tag could be £13-14,000 when it arrives in the UK early next year.
