New Car: 2014 Mazda 6 Wagon

The Mazda6 sedan is on its way to American shores pretty soon, but the forbidden fruit Mazda6 wagon will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month and then not go on sale here. Pity: Mazda’s released more photos of the wagon, and it’s still a looker.

We’ve already seen the Mazda6 wagon — at least in profile – on the production line, as a wagon was one of the first examples of the new 6 to roll off the assembly line in Hiroshima, Japan. That said, these new photos – released in advance of the Wagon’s official roll-out at the Paris Motor Show later this month – give us a feel for how it looks when viewed from other angles. The answer, of course, is stunning.

The wagon — which we’ve already learned won’t come to the United States — rides atop the same platform as the Mazda6 sedan, and will share its selection of engines as well. That includes the now-ubiquitous 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine (which powers the 3 and CX-5 now), an all-new 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G gas engine (which will reportedly make about 190 hp), and the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D engine that currently powers the CX-5 in international markets. That engine will be offered in both 147- and 173-hp forms.

Although the Mazda6 Wagon won’t come to our market, that 2.2-liter diesel engine certainly will, and it could be offered in either the 6 sedan or the CX-5 crossover. In any event, expect the Mazda6 wagon to make its in-the-flesh debut on September 27, and reach (international) dealers shortly thereafter. We Americans will still have to admire it from afar.
