New Car: 2012 Mahindra Bolero

India’s best-selling MUV just got better – Mahindra and Mahindra has launched an updated version of the Bolero. Prices start at Rs 6.19 lakh for the two-wheel-drive version; a 4X4 model will follow later.

The refreshed Bolero gets the 75bhp Low-Cost-Common-Rail (LCCR) engine from the recently introduced Scorpio EX. This engine delivers an ARAI-certified fuel economy figure of 15.96kpl, claims Mahindra.

The grill, which has been revised, now sports a darker grey shade (the earlier one was body-coloured), and so has a more prominent look. The front bumper is all new, as are the restyled headlamps, decals and spare-wheel cover. The MUV now also has a rear wiper with a defroster to meet future Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). However, there are no alloy wheels.

The interiors are where the major changes are evident – there’s a bronzed hue to the cabin. The plastics are beige in colour and there is an all-new digital instrument console with an LED display for the speedometer, fuel gauge and engine temperature. The new leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminium inserts, gear knob and aircon vents give the car a better overall feel. The seats are now in a dual-tone shade and the centre console gets wood trims. However, the overall plastic quality remains similar to the earlier model, which is quite poor.
