Hot News: 2016 Mercedes S-Class Pullman

What It Is: The long-wheelbase, ultra-luxury version of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-class. This stretched and lavishly equipped sedan will replace the ill-fated Maybach 57 and Maybach 62. The Pullman will be visibly distinguished from the regular S-class—we expect different headlights and additional brightwork, and it may be offered only with protective armor. The name draws on Mercedes-Benz history: The 600 “Grosser”, a huge understated sedan loved by dignitaries and celebrities alike, was offered in a long-wheelbase 600 Pullman model.

Why It Matters: The next-generation S needs to reassert Mercedes-Benz's position as the manufacturer of the world's best luxury cars. Similarly, the Pullman must recapture ground the freshly killed Maybach brand lost to Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

Platform: The new Pullman will use the next-generation S-class platform, which itself will be slightly stretched compared to the current model’s. The Pullman features a significantly longer wheelbase, entirely for the benefit of the rear passengers. Like the latest SL roadster, the next S-class and Pullman will make extensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials. This will be a rear-wheel-drive platform, and while Mercedes’ standard luxo-cruiser will be available with optional all-wheel drive, it’s unlikely that the Pullman will be modified to offer four-wheel traction as well.
