New Car: 2013 Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz recently spilled the beans on the new CLS Shooting Brake, and the car’s Europe-only status made us green with envy. Prepare for more heartache, then, as the German automaker has released information on the higher-performance CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake.

Powered by the brand’s 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8, the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake will put out an impressive 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, but a more potent variant bests those power figures with an extra 32 horses and a lot more torque. The special “Edition 1″ will produce 550 hp and 590 lb-ft, which the German automaker claims will get it from 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds with the Edition 1 upgrade and 4.4 seconds without it.

Both variants will send power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed transmission with four adjustable modes. Select controlled efficiency (C) for start/stop function, while sport (S), sport plus (S+), and manual (M) modes increase engine and transmission responsiveness. Both will also feature the typical AMG Ride Control suspension system and custom steering with Comfort, Sport and Sport plus settings, while ventilated carbon ceramic brakes are optional.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights with Intelligent Light System and adaptive Highbeam Assist, while AMG sport seats are swathed in nappa leather and AMG black piano lacquer trim. The three-spoke steering wheel is also covered in nappa leather, and features a flattened top and bottom for a racy appeal, as well as silver shift paddles. Like the CLS Shooting Brake, the CLS63′s cargo area features a wood-lined luggage compartment floor that uses American cherry tree wood. Rubber inserts in the rails protect the wood floor and prevents cargo from sliding around. Mercedes offers leather in 10 colors.

The CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake is available with other AMG options including the AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber package, white-illuminated AMG door sills, AMG alloy wheels in five- and 10-spoke designs painted in titanium grey or matte black colors, and the Bang & Olufsen surround sound system.

Customers in Europe can get their hands on the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake in October, while wealthy American enthusiasts can continue wishing Mercedes brings the special CLS to the U.S.
