Spied: 2014 Infiniti G

The recent sighting of a camouflaged Infiniti G sedan near the Nürburgring confirms that the Japanese automaker is hard at work on a new model. Despite the heavy camo, the brand’s signature shape and grille shell are visible. With the Infiniti lineup said to be adding a front-drive four-door as an entry-level model, the new G sedan appears to be larger than the current model.

When the current Infiniti G sedan went on sale in the 2007 model year, it performed well in our comparison against the E90 BMW 3 Series, losing by a small margin. With several of its key competitors updated or redesigned since then, the Infiniti G is due for an update. In a more recent comparison test, the Infiniti G25 came in seventh place out of eight contenders among premium compact sports sedans. Though that model was discontinued for the 2013 model year, sales of the G lineup (sedan, coupe, and convertible) have remained steady, with 46,052 units sold through the first eight months of 2012, compared to 43,383 units in the same period last year.
While engines for the new model haven’t been confirmed, the new G could use a Mercedes-Benz engine in addition to a revised version of the company’s 3.7-liter V-6, thanks to a recent deal signed between Renault/Nissan and Mercedes. The new Infiniti G sedan is expected to debut sometime next year with coupe and convertible models to follow. Europe could also see a wagon version though not likely to make it to the states.
