Recall Up Date: BMW, Volvo, & Lotus

BMW is recalling 32,000 of its turbocharged V-8- and V-12-powered models from 2008-2011 for the water pump circuit board potentially overheating. Volvo is also recalling some 2006-2012 S60 and C70 models for a mislabeled spare tire. Lotus has a recall of its own, for a potentially leaking oil hose on its 2005-2006 Exige and Elise models.

2008-2011 BMW 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X5, and X6

The Problem: BMW is recalling certain 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X5, and X6 models due to a potentially overheating circuit board for the auxiliary water pump. If the board overheats, the pump or entire engine can smolder, and potentially lead to a fire. The models that are affected are those equipped with the turbocharged V-8 and V-12 engines.

The Fix: BMW will begin notifying owners in November, and will replace the auxiliary water pump free of charge. Owners can also contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.

Number of Vehicles Affected: A total of 32,084 models from 2008-2011 are affected. The recall is split between 2606 5 Series, 1787 5 Series Gran Turismos, 18,195 7 Series (including Alpina B7 models), 4309 X5s, and 5187 X6s.

2006-2012 Volvo C70, 2011-2012 Volvo S60

The Problem: Certain Volvo S60 sedans and C70 convertibles equipped with the optional spare tire kit may not comply with federal label regulations. The labels do not comply with federal motor vehicle standard 110, “Tire Selection and Rims,” and could have incorrect information regarding tire inflation for the spare tire. Improper inflation of the tire could lead to a tire burst or flat and increase the risk of a crash. Affected C70 models were built between November 15, 2005 and July 31, 2011; affected S60s were built from July 14, 2010 to April 16,2011.

The Fix: Volvo will notify owners of affected vehicles through a mailing, and dealers will inspect the label; if necessary, they will replace it with a new label, free of charge. Owners can contact Volvo at 1-201-768-7300 on safety recall number R247.

Number of Vehicles Affected: 19,600 vehicles total; approximately 7000 2006-2012 Volvo C70s and 12,600 2011-2012 Volvo S60s.

2005-2006 Lotus Elise and Exige

The Problem:Due to an oil cooler line that may become detached from its fitting, Lotus is recalling certain 2005-2006 Exige and Elise models produced from June 1, 2004 to November 30, 2006. If the line becomes detached, it could potentially spray oil onto tires, decreasing traction and increasing the risk of a crash, or it could spray oil in the engine bay, which could increase the risk of fire. About 75 percent of 2005-2006 Exiges and Elises in the U.S. are expected to be affected.

The Fix: Lotus will notify owners of the defect, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge, if necessary. Lotus can be contacted by owners at 1-800-245-6887.

Number of Vehicles Affected: 5037 2005-2006 Lotus Exige and Elise sports cars.
