General Motors launched the latest Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible at the Los Angeles motor show with the claim that it is the world’s fastest convertible.
Statisticians and the likes of Bugatti may like to challenge that claim, but there’s no doubting the 2013 model year Camaro ZL1 Convertible is fast – its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 puts out a peak 572bhp and 556lb ft of torque, beating the likes of the Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible.
The engine features a Roots-style blower with a four-lobe rotor set and compact intercooler. The ZL1 also has a standard dual-mode exhaust system, with vacuum-actuated valves in the exhaust pipes for a refined exhaust note at low speeds as well as a free-flowing system for peak performance.
Although official performance figures haven't been released yet, the Coupe version of the Camaro ZL1 cover 0-60mph in 3.9sec and has a top speed of 184mph
To counter the effects of taking the roof off the drop-top variant, Chevrolet has fitted a front cross brace and a rear, V-shaped brace, plus strengthening around the transmission, underbody and across the front of the car. The Camaro ZL1 also features technologies like magnetic ride control active suspension and a performance traction management system.
The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible will be available in the US in the summer of next year. Pricing has yet to be announced.
