Spied: 2013 Dacia Popster

Here are the first pictures of Romanian budget brand Dacia’s forthcoming large MPV.

The model – code-named ‘J92’ – is expected to be called the Dacia Popster. It will arrive sometime after the brand’s long-awaited UK launch in 2012 and will expand the Renault-owned manufacturer’s range of budget cars.

These spy shots reveal a traditional MPV silhouette with a boxy and van-like shape, emphasised by high-mounted taillights. Sliding doors are clearly visible despite the heavy disguise, suggesting the Popster will be extremely practical. These pictures also show that a shorter commercial model is also planned, upon which sliding doors will appear on the kerbside only, minimising costs.

Inside, buyers can expect the model to be simple and functional with seating for seven across three rows.

In light of the disappointing three-star Euro NCAP crash-test ratings received for the other three models in Dacia’s European range, safety will be a concern. However we expect anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist to come as standard – as on the Duster SUV.

In an attempt to offset Dacia’s budget image, the Popster will wear a Renault badge in emerging markets. In the UK it’s likely to feature a subtle ‘By Renault’ badge on its bootlid, as seen on the VW Golf-sized Sandero hatch.

Key to the Popster’s appeal will be its cost. In-keeping with its brand-values of “simplicity, robustness and unbeatable value for money”, sources say that the Popster is likely to cost from £13,000 – which means it will significantly undercut mainstream rivals when it appears late next year.
