Spied: 2014 Cadillac CTS

What It Is: A 2014 Cadillac CTS wearing pretty heavy camouflage. It’s a prototype for the third-generation car; the original CTS launched for 2003, while this car’s predecessor arrived for 2008. The current car is available as a sedan, coupe, and wagon. The sedan is what we’ve captured here; we have heard no definitive word on whether Cadillac intends to continue offering multiple body styles, but a powerful V variant is as close to a sure thing as you can get.

Why It Matters: The CTS has been the feather in Cadillac’s cap during its decade-long renaissance, quickly becoming one of its most popular offerings and, recently, its only car. (It also has been on five consecutive 10Best Cars lists in one form or another.) For years, it’s attempted to compete on two levels, being sized more like larger cars such as the Mercedes-Benz E-class and BMW 5-series while selling at a price commensurate with those of the BMW 3-series, Infiniti G37, and Audi A4. That strategy was necessary as Cadillac fought for respect after years of woeful products ill-suited to take on the world’s best. That will change with this new model. With the new 2013 ATS, Cadillac will have a direct opponent for the 3er and A4, and will reposition the CTS as a proper 5-series fighter.

Platform: Expect the new CTS to utilize GM’s rear-drive Alpha platform, which also underpins the all-new ATS. Exact dimensional changes from the previous generation remain unknown, but it’s clear from these spy photos that the next-gen CTS will be longer than its predecessor.
