New Car: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

Jeep hopes to cater to its off-roading fan base with two new special edition models. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, previewed in March at the Jeep Easter Jeep Safari, makes its debut as a production model, while the Wrangler Moab is named for the tough trails of Moab, Utah.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk transforms the company’s midsize SUV into a more capable machine for leaving pavement behind. The upgrades begin with 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in Kevlar-reinforced tires, Quadra-Lift air suspension that can raise the Grand Cherokee by up to 11 inches, five-mode Selec-Terrain traction control, steel rock rails to protect the Jeep’s body, and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential.

Visual touches include red tow hooks, tinted headlight surrounds, a black hood decal designed to reduce glare from the sun, red-stitched leather seats, and special Mopar “slush” floor mats. Buyers can choose between the Grand Cherokee’s 3.6-liter V-6 or 5.7-liter V-8 engine, and from one of five paint colors: Bright White, Brilliant Black, Mineral Gray, Maximum Steel and Deep Cherry Red.
