Having sold 900,000 examples of the MX-5 Miata around the world over the past 23 years, Mazda plans to celebrate its popular roadster by launching another Special Edition version of the MX-5. Scheduled to be unveiled at the Chicago auto show next week, the new trim pack brings a raft of styling tweaks to the Japanese sports car.
The MX-5 Special Edition is based on a Power Retractable Hardtop model in Grand Touring trim. The hardtop is painted black, marking the first time Mazda has offered a non-body color roof in North America. To complement the dark roof, the limited-run Miata also scores new red and white paint colors.
There also are new 17-inch gunmetal wheels, black exterior accent pieces, black heated leather seats, and piano-black interior trim. On top of that, the Special Edition Miata is fitted with the Suspension and Premium packages, which brings goodies like a limited-slip differential, keyless entry and ignition, and Bluetooth.
Also on display at the company’s stand in Chicago will be the Mazda Turbo2 concept, a 1990 Miata with just 3688 miles on the odometer, Patrick Dempsey’s Miata Grand-Am race car, and a Mazda Indy Car racer.
The company says the limited-run model continues the Miata’s heritage as a “dynamically-engineered, enthusiast-approved roadster.” Pricing and availability information will be announced when the car is unveiled publicly next week in Chicago.
